My Dad, Boyd Bates, was a good friend of Tommy's. We visited the family in Maryland several times, but, my memories are of Tommy, Shirley, Kitty and Bonnie Jo, visiting us on PA. Almost every deer hunting season, Tommy would come stay at the Skyline Hotel next door to us, and we'd all get up early and head out hunting. One year, we were hunting from my grandparents place in Trout Run, and a buck came running full tilt down over the hill right at my dad and Tommy. Before Tommy could get his rifle up, dad had already shot the buck, who, literally, died right at their feet! Another year, we were on back roads that were a sheet of ice, and Tommy kept threatening my dad that he was going to jump out! "Bates! Stop this dam truck or I'm gonna jump! Don't you even try to go any further, up hill's bad enough, but sliding down hill, I don't think so!" My dad kept going, with Tommy is hanging on for dear life, braced against the dash!

I only had the pleasure of knowing Pop Tommy a very short time but in that short time he was really a joy to take care of. He didn't say much but you could tell he was very happy and very well taken care of.
