Arthur Thomas “Unk” Queen, age 83, of Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville, MD; formerly of Randallstown, MD, died Monday, April 1, 2024, at BridgingLife- Dove House in Westminster, MD.
Art was born February 24, 1941, in Nutter Fort, West Virginia, the son of the late Minter A. Queen, Sr. and the late Bessie Mae Queen (nee Looman). He was the youngest of five children. The late Betty Virginia Queen, Ula Mae Fulknier, and Minter “Bud” Queen, Jr.
Art has been in the funeral business for over 60 years, having worked in Davis Weaver Funeral Home in West Virginia as a teenager. He came to Maryland at the age of twenty to work at Tickner Funeral Home in Baltimore, followed by Ruck Funeral Home.
He began working at Loring Byers Funeral Home in Randallstown, MD, in May 1968 where he later became the owner. He then purchased what is now Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A. in 1992.
He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, fusing glass and painting. He was a member of the former Liberty Exchange Club. Art taught Bible Study for 18 years at Colonial Baptist Church in Pikesville, directed and was the makeup artist for many plays. He was a member of Elders Baptist Church. He enjoyed taking Youth Groups to his cabin in West Virginia. Former Member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes (NSM), Member of Maryland State Funeral Directors Association; Tri-County Funeral Directors Association and CANA. He enjoyed going to Ocean City, MD in the early years, then to his Cabin at the Woods Resort in Hedgesville, West Virginia. Honorary Member of Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company, Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Company, and Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club.
As a kid, he enjoyed being at his Aunt and Uncle’s ice cream shop. By the time he was twelve, he could make their ice cream for them. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of ice cream!
Art is survived by his sister Wilma Brandenburg, nephew David, niece Laura and her husband Anthony Carella, and their daughters Olivia Carella and Melanie and her husband Steven Brisgone, two other nieces, Patricia Grant and Diana White and his extended family, the Kellners, the Coveys, and the Buck families.
He was beloved by his nieces and nephews and many young people who have grown up calling him “Unk.”
Friends and family may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD (Beside South Carroll High School) on Monday, April 8, 2024 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM; and on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 9:30 am-10:30 AM at Elders Baptist Church, 1216 Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 at which time Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 AM; with his Pastor Jim Edmonson officiating.
Interment to follow at Moreland Memorial Park Cemetery in Parkville, MD.
