Clyde Boller
December 1, 1922 — March 2, 2015
Clyde Richard Boller, longtime resident of Mount Airy, MD, passed on Monday, March 2, 2015. He was most recently a resident of Westminster Ridge Assisted Living in Westminster, MD. He cherished the camaraderie and friendship of the Ridge neighborhood.
Born on December 1, 1922, at the Rocky Ridge homestead to Guy Wilbur Boller and Flora Ruth Welty Boller, he was the youngest and last surviving of four children -Wilbur, Madeline, and Harry. Before serving in the Army during WWII in the European and Pacific theaters with the 67th Signal Battalion, he attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in Westminster. His lifetime career with the B&O Railroad spanned forty-three years from station agent in Woodbine to a Computer Analyst in Baltimore, where he developed new techniques in rolling stock management.
Family life was very important to Clyde; he recorded via home movies the activities of his five children and their interests from childhood to adulthood. He spent quality time with his children sledding in the winter and hand cranking ice cream in the summer.
Family reunions reinforced the value of family heritage. He had traced his ancestry back eight generations to the homeland, before the convenience of the internet.
Travel was high on his agenda, visiting his children and grandchildren throughout the states. After retirement, Alaska and Hawaii were on the itinerary shared with his wife of 65 years, Julia Christine Hollinger Boller, who predeceased him in 2007.
Some of his significant community involvement included past president of the Mount Airy Kiwanis Club; Calvary United Methodist Church men's choir in Mount Airy, Sunday school teacher, and other church activities; formed a family chorale: played trombone to accompany his children singing and playing the piano. As an amateur radio enthusiast, W3DBU was fluent at Morse code and developed friendships worldwide.
He is survived by his children, Cynthia Kirby, Susan Boller, Christina Tsen, Thomas Boller, and Melissa Sadtler; son-in-law Brian Sadtler; along with eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are grandsons Charles Tsen, Daniel Sadtler, and Ben Boller, and granddaughters Stephanie Beard, Rachael Darby, and Allie Boller. Connie Johnson and Karen Kirby will also miss their grandfather.
Family will be receiving friends from 5 to 8 PM on Friday, March 6, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD. Burial service will be conducted at 11 AM on Saturday, March 7, with visitation at 10 AM. Interment will be at Moravian Cemetery in Graceham, MD.
His spirit now soars free, unbounded by restrictions of life.
