Mrs. Elizabeth Hill Messner, 81, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 8th 2011 at Lorien Nursing Home in Mt. Airy, MD. Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Hess Slagle on December 19, 1929 to Claude and Ella Mae Slagle of Carroll County, Maryland. She was raised on Flag Marsh Road and graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1947. On November 7, 1948, she married Allen Hill of Daisy, Maryland. Allen passed away in 1989. In 1996, she married John Messner of Ellicott City who passed away in 2009. Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda. Surviving family include daughter, Ellen Hill Kilby of Sykesville, daughter Patti Hill Cannaday and husband Fred of Mt. Airy, son, Christopher Hill and wife Jennifer of Thurmont, grandsons Scott Kilby of Sykesville, Brian Cannaday and Daniel Cannaday of Frederick, granddaughters Beth Kilby Schwartz and husband Gregory of Sykesville and Laura Cannaday Keefer and husband David of New Market. Elizabeth was blessed by the recent addition of three great-grandchildren: twins Morgan and Benjamin Schwartz and Mason Keefer. Upon graduation from high school, Elizabeth worked a short time as a secretary at Southern States Cooperative in Baltimore. In the 60’s, she worked as a teachers’ secretary at Lisbon Elementary School. For over 40 years, she worked in her husband’s auctioneering business completing clerical and secretarial duties. More important was her commitment to her church, Calvary Lutheran in Mt. Airy. Elizabeth was a member of the choir for approximately 50 years. She was involved in many ministries including the women’s group, fund raising team and Top of the Hill luncheon group. Elizabeth was a “behind the scenes” steward. This was true not only as it related to the church, but to her life in general. She was a caretaker to many and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Elizabeth lived the majority of her life in the Mt. Airy area. In 1996 she moved to the senior housing development in Wildwod Park. She lived there until 2009 when it was necessary for her to move to an assisted living facility due to the progress of her dementia. She resided at the Homestead of Sun Valley for two years before moving to the Lorien in Mt. Airy due to complications occurring after a hip fracture. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at both the Homestead and Lorien for the excellent care and support they provided. The family would also like to commend the Gilchrist hospice team for their support during the last few weeks of her life. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA., 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, Maryland 21784.
