Erna Meyer Bunn, 90, of Columbia, MD, passed away at 1:45 AM on Sunday, December 24, 2017 from ovarian cancer at Homestead Assisted Living at Sun Valley in Eldersburg, MD. She was born August 3, 1927 in Grohn, Germany to Carl and Sophie Meyer. Erna married the late Paul Meredith Bunn on July 20, 1949 in Bremen, Germany. They settled in Simpsonville, now known as Columbia, MD.
Erna was a devoted mother who was well known for her infectious laughter and sacrificial love for her three children and others. Erna had a degree in Early Childhood Education and was a teacher with Howard County Head Start where she devoted her life to the children and their families. She retired on April 1, 2000 after 32 years of service. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, game shows, spending time with her grandchildren, and ( oh yeah ) bargain hunting.
She was a founding member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Columbia, MD which became her extended family. Erna served as a representative to the Delaware-Maryland Synod, was on the Church Council, and a member of the building committee. She loved to serve her New Hope family through providing for the weekly coffee hour, working in the church office, and would always be a willing volunteer elsewhere when needed.
Erna was predeceased by her sons Glenn M. Bunn, 49 of Laurel, MD and Ralph M. Bunn, 56 of Stuart, FL.
Surviving are her daughter Faith D. Pickett and husband Brian R. Pickett of Sykesville, MD, grandchildren Josiah R.K. Pickett and Emily F.C. Pickett of Sykesville, MD, and grandson Paul M. Bunn of Columbia, MD.
Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 6, at 11 AM at New Hope Lutheran Church, 8575 Guilford Road, Columbia, Md. with Pastor Ginny Price officiating.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the building program at New Hope Lutheran Church.
The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful comfort and care given by Seasons Hospice of Carroll County and to the extended family at New Hope Lutheran Church for their incredible help and support. Online condolences at www.burrier-queen.com
