Ethel Farver

Ethel LaRue Farver (Waddell), age 98, formerly of Winfield, MD, died Friday, October 30, 2015 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, MD.
Ethel was born on April 8, 1917 in a farmhouse at Sam’s Creek, Maryland. She was the eldest of eight children of the late Sherman Benjamin Waddell and the late Emma LaRue Stuller Waddell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Thomas Farver who died in 1975.
Ethel was retired after 38 years as a Floral Designer at the Flower Box in Westminster at age 85. She became a member of the Taylorsville United Methodist Church in 1940, and taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, served as president of the UMW, member of the Official Board and Cemetery Board, and was Chairman of the Memorial Committee. She also helped cook and serve dinners at numerous church suppers and bazars spanning more than six decades.
She was a charter member of the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, having served as president and chaplain. Ethel was a past president of the Taylorsville Women’s Club and also past president of the Winfield Elementary School PTA. Since her daughters were involved in the 4H Club, she served as a leader for several years.
Ethel loved poetry and composed many poems, especially for special occasions. As a hobby, she made and sold ceramics for 50 years. Ethel’s baking skills were well-known in the Winfield community due to the custard and fruit pies she made for fund-raising events. Folks also enjoyed her renowned pickled beets as well as cucumber and watermelon pickles.
Ethel was the mother of Faye Farver Culwell and husband Mark Eugene Culwell of Mt. Airy, Dr. Linda L. Farver of Lynchburg, Virginia and E. Jane Farver of Owings Mills. She is survived by a sister, Thelma Waddell Ditman, and a brother, Leonard Waddell and his wife, Charlotte, and sister-in-law, Madeline Waddell. Ethel was preceded in death by sisters, Louise Waddell Hughes and Lucille Waddell Drechsler and brothers Samuel Waddell, Herbert Waddell, and James Waddell. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Ruth Farver Gosnell. She is survived by grandson Mathew Thomas Culwell and wife, Peggy, and their three sons, Nicholas, Benjamin, and Stephen. Ethel was also aunt and great aunt of numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit the family at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (beside South Carroll High School) on Monday from 4-7 pm, with a Winfield Ladies Auxiliary Service at 6:30 pm and Tuesday from 10-11 am at Taylorsville U.M. Church, 4356 Ridge Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771. A celebration of Ethel’s life will begin at 11:00 am with Rev. Sherri Comer-Cox and Rev. O.F. “Bud” Kibbe officiating. Interment will follow at the Taylorsville U.M. Church Cemetery, Taylorsville, MD.
