Frank Harry Miller, age 79, of Mt. Airy died Sunday, May 19, 2013 in Moscow, Russia.
He was born October 25, 1933 in Martinsburg, WV; he was the son the late Alonza W. Miller and late Bonnie Lucas Moreland.
He was the husband of Althea Vickers Miller married June 21, 1957.
He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Martinsburg, WV in 1951, he graduated from Shepherd College (BA degree) in 1955 and West Virginia University (MM) in 1963, and did post-graduate work at University of Maryland and Western Maryland College (now McDaniel). He served in the US Army in 434th Army Band (1955-57). He was employed by Carroll County Public Schools 1957-1989. He taught instrumental music at several Carroll County public schools- (Mt. Airy, Sykesville, Taneytown and Winfield); He was assistant principal at South Carroll High School, and supervisor of Vocational Education. He served on numerous educational committees on a state and local level. He was a Member of Carroll County Education Association, Maryland State Teachers Association, National Educational Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals and American Vocational Association, and National Retired Teachers Association.
He is survived by children: William Newton Miller and wife Lee Adams of Petersburg, VA; Robert Andrew Miller and wife Debbie of Richmond, VA; grandchildren: Katherine Elizabeth Miller and husband Jeremy Seppi; Madison Nicole Miller, and Abigail Victoria Miller. He is also survived by a sister, Emily Miller Waters of Martinsburg, WV.
He was recognized as Honorary State Farmer and Honorary State Agriculturist, the highest degree bestowed on supporters of FFA in Maryland in 1985, Who’s Who in America and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, selective honor society for educators and a former member and past president of Mt. Airy Kiwanis Club; former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Damascus, president of church council, member of choir; current member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Mt. Airy. Along with his wife, Althea, he was a recipient of the Jack Heise Terrapin Spirit Award of the University of Maryland in 2011, and they were inducted into the UMD M Club as honorary members in 2012. He was an avid Maryland Terrapin sports fan and had a great interest in photography.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Calvary Lutheran Church, 16151 Old Frederick Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771 with Pastors Eric and Anke Deibler officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service at noon at church. Following the Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy, MD, there will be a tailgate luncheon at the church hall.
