George E. Carter, Jr., 88, of Ijamsville, MD passed away peacefully on September 8, 2024, with his loving wife by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife Audrey Gayle Carter (nee Care) of 69 years. George was born on April 25, 1936, in McKeesport, PA to the late George E. Carter, Sr. and the late Elizabeth A. Carter (nee Hudak).
George, a man of faith, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, who loved and was loved, lived a full life with many fond memories of family celebrations, holidays, get-togethers, and his annual Shrimp and Crab Feast. He had a great sense of humor, always a smile on his face, a booming voice, and a robust laugh. His career stemmed over 60 years beginning in Pennsylvania at Balsamo’s, US. Steel, and then Westinghouse before moving to Maryland in 1962. He then worked at W. Bell & Co located in Washington, DC and Maryland for 30 years, and lastly Floors, Inc. in Maryland.
George was an active member of Lisbon United Methodist Church for over 45 years serving as Lay Servant for 25 years, a choir member for over 40 years including singing in the semi-annual community cantatas, was a member of the United Methodist Men, and served on various church committees. He was known for his spiritual prayers.
He kept busy with Scouting, both Cub and Boy Scouts, and was an Assistant Boy Scout leader. He went hiking, camping, canoeing down the Potomac, and volunteered with different activities. In his free time, he enjoyed mowing the lawn on his riding lawn mower, gardening, washing the family cars, and golfing. After his retirement he joined a Sr. Golf League in Frederick County. He especially loved his vacations at the beach as he enjoyed watching the waves and relaxing. Many of his weekends were filled with attending his grandchildren’s various sports and school activities which filled him with much joy.
He is also survived by his children, George G. Carter and wife Cecilia of Beltsville, MD, Denise Shuster and husband Rob of North Potomac, MD, Terri Treadway and husband Bill of Monrovia, MD, and Craig Carter of Frederick, MD; his brother Kenneth Carter of Santa Ana, CA; his brother-in-law Ronald Care of North Huntingdon, PA; grandchildren, Ryan McCole and wife Amanda of Walkersville, MD, Marissa Aydt and husband Brandon of Ranson, WV, Hayley McCole of Boise, ID, Sean McCole of Frederick, MD, Elizabeth Carter of Rockville, MD, Melissa Frys and husband Jon of Andrews Air Force Base, MD, Michael Shuster and wife Cristi of NYC, NY, and Rachael Shalen and husband Josh of Atlanta, GA; step grandchildren, Tyler Treadway of Mt. Airy, MD, Vianney Enriquez and husband Julius of Wiesbaden, Germany, and Irish Carpo of Falls Church, VA; great-grandchildren, Grayson Frys, Charlotte Frys, Morgan McCole, Macey McCole, Bennett Aydt, and future granddaughter Aydt due in January 2025; step great grandchildren, Kelsey Enriquez, and Kaden Enriquez; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Donald Carter and Duane Carter, brother-in-law Chester Care, and Sisters-In-Law Rosa Carter, Marilynn Carter, Rosalie Carter, Judith Care, June Care, and Sue Care; daughter-in-law Patricia Carter, and nephew Don Carter.
A Celebration of Life Service to be held at Lisbon United Methodist Church, 15875 Frederick Rd, Lisbon, MD 21765 on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 12:30 pm with lunch to follow. Pastor T. J. Mount will officiate.
