George Joseph Strohmer Sr., 86, died peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at home on the family farm in Woodstock Md surrounded by loving family.
Born in Baltimore, July, 2, 1926, the son of the late George L. Strohmer and the late Katherine Winkler Strohmer, he lived in White Marsh until at the age of 5 when his parents moved to Woodstock. He graduated from Catonsville High School in 1942. At the age of 35, the most eligible bachelor of his time met his mate, (late) Florence Strohmer (nee Vesper) and began a family. A loving father, he is survived by his children Bud, Dee, Richard and Brenda. He is also survived by loving sister-in-law Eileen Hoppert, nephew Barry Hoppert, nieces Amy Van Gulick and Beth Borkenheim, and great nieces Elizabeth and Emily Van Gulick. He is also survived by many cousins and numerous friends.
George spent his entire life as a professional farmer. His reputation preceded him and he was called upon on numerous occasions to be a spokesperson promoting agricultural interests. Examples of his activism include supporting events showcasing livestock, providing hayrides, the Mayors Hog Calling contest in Baltimore City, and a radio announcement on CBM. He drove his tractor to the US Capitol in the late 70s, along with 20 other farmers, to support the bottle bill promoting recycling.
He was instrumental as an advocate of farming and his farming family, president of Baltimore County Farm Bureau and held a seat at the Maryland State level from 1972-1975. He also served as a board member of the Maryland Pork Producers, a 4-H Leader and a Swine Superintendant. He pioneered the 4-H swine leasing program in Baltimore County which allowed 4-Hers the means to show pigs and aided in the growth of the swine program. He was also instrumental in starting a Baltimore County 4-H livestock sale program. In addition to taking care of his land, he also managed and farmed over 400 acres of the Woodstock College, the oldest Jesuit seminary in the United States for over 20 years. .
Besides being a wonderful husband and father, for pleasure he learned to play the guitar and piano by ear, formed a band and played at local events throughout the area. He also graduated from auctioneering school in Indiana. He didn't go on to use this skill but was voted the favorite in his class.
As a dedicated and devoted Catholic he was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus R.C. church, served as an altar boy, lector, Sunday school teacher and member of the Holly Named Society (since disbanded). Also was a member of Knights of Columbus.
He was easily loved and remembered by everyone he encountered along his journey.
A celebration of his life, Funeral Liturgy (MASS) will be on Saturday January 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Alphonsus R.C. Church, 10800 Old Court Road, Woodstock, MD 21163 with Fr. Joseph P. Lacey, S.J. officiating, Interment Holy Family R.C. Church Cemetery, Randallstown,
