George Waterman Welsh, Jr., age 90, of Hampstead, MD and formerly of Randallstown, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on March 5, 2025. He was born in Cumberland, MD on October 4, 1934, son of the late George Waterman Welsh, Sr. and the late Ethel May Welsh (nee Wagner).

George was the husband of the late Janet Warren Welsh who predeceased him in November 2023. They were married on September 12, 1959 at St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Church in Pikesville, MD. Their 64-year marriage was blessed with love and laughter far outweighing the challenging moments. They met at Milford Mill High School in the early 1950’s.

After graduating from Milford Mill High School in 1952, George took one year off and worked for the City of Baltimore as an engineering aid. He entered the University of Baltimore in 1953, on a full scholarship for basketball and baseball, and graduated in 1957 with a degree in Business Management. George served in the Maryland National Guard from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1960. He worked for many years in banking and finance and was a co-owner, from 1977 to 1987, of Hi-Way Travelers, an RV dealership in Elkridge, MD. After retiring from his career, George worked part-time at Loring Byers Funeral Home and Burrier-Queen Funeral Home.

Second to his wife and family, George loved sports! He was an exceptional athlete who played basketball and baseball in college and was inducted into the University of Baltimore Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. After college, he had try-outs with the Baltimore Bullets for basketball and the Pittsburgh Pirates for baseball. He didn’t end up playing professionally but played semi-pro ball in both sports. George was involved with the Randallstown Jaycees, Randallstown Optimist Club, and served on the vestry and as Junior Warden at St. Mark’s Church. For fun, George and his brother-in-law and dear friend, Jim Tracey, enjoyed cheering for the racehorses they owned. Don’t worry, there were no Preakness winners from Bedrock Stables!

George loved his family deeply and is survived by his three children and their spouses, Jannell (Jeff) Sloan of Ninety Six, SC; Pam (Roland) Nickoles of Hampstead, MD; and George “Chip” Welsh (Karen) of Towson, MD; eight grandchildren, Steven (Caitlin) Sloan, Shawn (Jennifer) Sloan, Kevin (Nicole) Nickoles, Brandon (Juliana) Sloan, Cole (Kayla) Nickoles, George R. Welsh, Jr., William Welsh, and Jenna Welsh; as well as six great-grandchildren, Aleena Nickoles, Oliver Sloan, Sophia Nickoles, Eloise Sloan, Bennett Nickoles, and Cameron Sloan. George was predeceased by his two sisters Lula Dillinger and Maxine Wilson.

George and Janet wished to have a combined memorial service and will be interred together at the St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Church columbarium. The service for George and Janet will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Church in Pikesville, Maryland. There will be a reception in the parish hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Church. To donate online: stmarksonthehill.org. To donate by mail: St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Church, 1620 Reisterstown Rd., Pikesville, MD 21208.
