H. Marshall Fleming, 89, of Poplar Springs, Howard County, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Marshall was born on September 20, 1935, in Poplar Springs, Maryland, to Harry Marshall Fleming and Marguerite Frances (King) Fleming in the home of his grandfather, John Denton Fleming, and his great-aunt, Flora Amelia Fleming.

A proud graduate of Lisbon High School, Marshall completed all 12 years of his education there, graduating in 1954. Throughout his high school years, he worked part-time at Viner’s Paper Mill in Woodbine, starting at the age of 16. After graduation, he began working at Montgomery Ward’s Toy Department in Baltimore, eventually transitioning to the International Harvester Parts Depot in Baltimore, where he worked as a computer operator. In addition, he worked evenings at Maryland Casualty. Marshall dedicated 30 years to his career with International Harvester, before retiring as a well-respected member of the team.

Upon his retirement from International Harvester, Marshall continued to stay active. He worked as a crew foreman for Greenspace Inc., a landscaping company in Gaithersburg. Marshall also lent his time and skills to Hillside Nursery, Inc., where he assisted his oldest son and daughter-in-law with flower deliveries.

Marshall was deeply involved in his community, particularly with the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., from the young age of 16. Over his more than 70 years of service, he served as Chief in 1975, as President in 1960–1962 and again in 1967, and held numerous positions on the board of directors. He served as president of the Howard County Volunteer Firefighters Association in 1966 and was a delegate to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association. In 2015 he was inducted to the Howard County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame. He was honored with a Governor’s Citation in 2010 for his decades of service to the community.

A devoted member of the church and various local organizations, Marshall was affiliated with the Watersville United Methodist Church, Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, and the I.O.G.T. Lodge #278. He was also active in the Mount Airy Senior Center, the Mount Airy 55 Plus Club, and numerous other community associations, including the Poplar Springs Community Hall Association, the Poplar Springs Cemetery Association, and the Howard County Antique Farm Equipment Club. He was a proud member of the Loyal Order of Moose Westminster Lodge, the I.H. Red Power Club, the Mason-Dixon Knife Club, and the National Rifle Association.

Marshall is survived by his wife, Jane (Bowman) Fleming; two sons, Jonathan Russell Fleming and his wife, Stephanie, and Franklin Marshall Fleming, all of Poplar Springs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Steven Marshall Fleming and his wife, Amy (Sonntag) Fleming, and Jaimie Michelle (Fleming) Shirokobrod and her husband, Gene Shirokobrod. His great-grandchildren, Aaron Jonathan Shirokobrod, Zoe Marguerite Shirokobrod, Robert Marshall Fleming, and Elizabeth Rose Fleming, were the light of his life. Marshall’s family was completed by his loyal granddog, Cooper.

Marshall’s legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family and community will forever be remembered by all who knew him. A true example of kindness, hard work, and commitment, he leaves behind a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the Poplar Springs community.
