Harry Russell Mayer, age 93, of Sykesville, died Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Fairhaven Health Care Center in Sykesville, MD.
He was born April 28, 1923 in Baltimore, MD the son of the late Frederick Mayer and the late Bertha Summers Mayer.
He was the loving husband of the late Zelda Grey Mayer (nee Holcomb) of 64 years.
Russell was the father of Jackie Norris and husband George of Libertytown, MD., and the late David Mayer.
He served in the Army during WWII as a medic. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, and Presidential Unit Citation; after his Military service he served as a Police Officer for the Baltimore County Police Department for 20 years, worked for Markel Services, and Painted for Wayne Jolly Painting Contractors. He loved gardening with his wife and family gatherings. He was a former Carroll County Board of License Commissioners, Liquor Board, from Sept 1989 to June of 1997 chairman for 3 years and a member of Randallstown American Legion Post #122 and VFW Westminster Post #467.
He is survived by sisters in law Peggy Buschman and husband Lee of Ocala, FL, Margaret Gardner and Ruth McCullough of Catonsville, very special nephew Jerry Mayer and very special nieces Joan Mayer and Connie Schultheis, many other nieces and nephews; 5 grandchildren- Michael Mayer, Julie Holtzople, Tim Mayer, Jerred Holtzople and Katie Latimer; 11 great grandchildren- Tyler, Emily, Lauren and Colby Holtzople, Ellie, Max, and Clair Cummings, Erika and Amy Latimer, Ryan and Whitney Mayer.
Mr. Mayer was preceded in death by his brothers Gordon, Frederick, Earl, and C. Stanley Mayer and sister Elaine Wagner.
Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville (Beside South Carroll High School) on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Service will be held at the Chapel at Fairhaven, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Wayne Larson, Chaplain at Fairhaven officiating. Private Inurnment. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Grey’s Team, 108 Byte Dr., Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702 or Fairhaven Chapel.
