Harvey Woodrow Wilson Tabler age 96 of Mt. Airy, quietly slipped into the Lord’s presence on January 29, 2016, at Martinsburg VA Medical Center in West Virginia.
He was born June 21, 1919 near Plane #4 right outside Mt. Airy. Harvey was the 8th of the 11 children of the late Albert Sidney Tabler, Sr. and Eva Elizabeth Care Tabler. He is the last of his siblings to pass away.
In the early 1920’s he and his family moved to a farm on North Main Street right next to the Mt. Airy School. In 1940 Harvey enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served with Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s White Horse, Battery C – 55th Field Artillery Unit stationed at Ft. Myer, Va. He went to the Philippines shortly after, while fighting in WW II. He was part of the 16th Field Artillery which was part of McArthur’s Eighth Army. Tabler saw the great general twice. He returned to Mt. Airy and purchased Mt. Olive Stock Farm and raised Black Angus beef cattle.
In 1950 Harvey married his young sweetheart, Bernice Sweeney, and was her loyal husband for over 54 years before her passing in 2005. He was the devoted father of son, Roger William Tabler, Sr. and fiancée Sandy Roark of Mt. Airy; daughter Doris Ann and Jerome Bujanowski of Mt. Airy; daughter Melissa Elizabeth and Bobby Lantz of Thurmont; and son Glenn Brian Tabler and Terri of Mt. Airy. He loved his daughter-in-law, Billie Rose Moss Tabler, as his own. She passed away November 2001. Harvey was the brother to 10 siblings who have all passed away. They are: Ralph Levi Tabler of Frederick, William Irving Tabler of Mt. Airy, Virginia Elizabeth Dayhoff of Dickerson, Eva Estelle Derr of Frederick, Edith Irene Tabler of Rocky Ridge, Vivian Eleanor Howes of Damascus, Albert Sidney Tabler, Jr. of Rocky Ridge, Arthur Willard Tabler of Mt. Airy, Hazel Nadine Tabler of Mt. Airy, and Howard LaFollette Tabler of Damascus.
He was the loving grandfather of Lisa Dawn and Daran Ossinger of New Windsor; Roger William Tabler, Jr. and Becky of Manchester; Sara Elizabeth and Oliver Valenzuela of New Market; Philip Andrew Tabler and Deanna of Frederick; Katy Lyn and Matthew Finnell of Mt. Airy; Brandon Allen, Brittany Lynn, Brooke Marie, Brandy Nichole, and Bridget Michelle Tabler of Mt. Airy; along with Sheila Lynn and Stephen Borror of Monkton; and Susan Michelle and Mark Ditt of New Freedom, Pa. He was the great-grandfather to Rachel Tabler, Roger W. Tabler, III, Jaclyn and Emily Ditt, Casey and Cole Borror, Owen, Wyatt, and Eva Valenzuela, and Marisa Ossinger.
His memberships have included: Charter/Life Member of Mt. Airy American Legion, Life Member of VFW Post 10076, Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans of Westminster, the Izaak Walton League, 4-H, MAVFC, 55-Plus, Senior Center of Mt. Airy, Farm Bureau, Southern States, and Christian Farmers Outreach. He was inducted into the Mt. Airy Hall of Fame in 2015. He faithfully served at local churches in the Mt. Airy area since he was a child and shared the gospel of Christ to just about everyone he would meet. In 1972, he and his wife sold their farm, which is now part of the Paddocks. Later, the county purchased their home for the proposed Gillis Falls Reservoir. Harvey enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, wood crafts, cutting firewood, traveling, family dinners, and most of all serving his Lord and Savior. He will be missed by many.
A Christian funeral service given by Pastor Tom Parris and will be held at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784(Beside S. Carroll High) on Saturday, February 6, 2016 10 AM . Interment Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mt. Airy, MD
The Family will receive friends on Friday, February 5, 2016 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM with a VFW Memorial Service at 8:30 PM.
