Helen V. Sier Franklin died March 31, 2014 at the Dove House, Westminster, MD 2014. She was a resident of Copper Ridge, Sykesville, MD for 5 years.
She was born September 1, 1916 in Plane 4, Frederick, MD the daughter of the late John Romain Sier and late Janie Burke Sier.
She attended Frederick County Public Schools a one room school house located on the family farm where she completed the elementary course of Studies in June of 1928. Then on to Mt. Airy High School where she completed a commercial course of studies in June of 1932.
After graduation she married James A Franklin. She had three children: Betty Marie, Robert Eugene(Bob) and James William (Bill). Following her divorce she became employed as a seamstress for Frederick Tailoring Co. for 25 years. She advanced to a managerial position when they closed , retiring in 1973. The next five years she worked at Goulds in Westminster, MD. In 1978 she began a second career of volunteerism and public service for the next 31 years. She was a board member and officer of many organization: Westminster Senior Citizens Club serving as treasurer, New Windsor Senior Citizens club serving as secretary and president, American Association of Retired Person (AARP) of Carroll County Chapter serving as membership chairman and assistant treasurer and assistant escort for bus trips, New Windsor Ladies Auxiliary, Super Sixties of the Church of the Open Door and Carroll County Hospital Auxiliary serving as treasurer. She volunteered at Carroll Hospital Center at the information desk for over 30 years, logging over 15,000 hours. In 1991 she was inducted into AARP’s Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for her volunteerism. And in 1997 she was named Maryland’s Most Beautiful Person for Carroll County, again for her volunteer work. She was chosen from 25 nominees.
As a young child she attended Marvin Chapel Church in Plane 4 Frederick County where she was baptized. In 1931 her family moved to Franklinville, MD She became a member of Taylorsville United Methodist Church. She attended Sunday school and church regularly, studied the Bible on a daily basis and took part in many of the church’s programs. She was the organist of the church for many years. In later years she attended the Church of the Open Door in Westminster where she became involved in many of the ministries. She loved to travel, visiting every state in the US at least once.
Surviving her are her daughter, Betty Franklin Fowler and husband Robert of Westminster Sons Robert Eugene (Bob) Franklin and wife Sharon Wright of Mt. Airy, MD James William (Bill) Franklin and wife Sonia Hottinger of Crofton, MD Sister Kathryn Isabelle Sier Vollmer and husband Paul of Dunnellen, FL. Six grandchildren and their spouses Robert Jeffrey and Lisa Franklin of Columbus, OH Sheri Lynn Franklin and Gary Maring of Woodbine, Michael Ralph and Shawn Franklin of Woodbine, Christopher Todd and Christina Franklin of Woodbine, Jay William and Kara Franklin of Crofton, MD Kellye Lynn Franklin and Rick Anderson of Sykesville . 12 Great-grandchildren and 2 great-step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a devoted friend and travel companion Algie D. King, Sisters Edna Mae Sier Shipley of New Windsor, and Pauline Virginia Sier Burdette .
Funeral Services will be held Monday 11 AM at BURRIER-QUEEN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Interment will be in Taylorsville Cemetery, Taylorsville, MD Memorial Contributions may be made to Copper Ridge or Copper Ridge Institute, 710 Obrecht Rd. Sykesville, MD 21784-7650
