Herman Jesse Manahan, age 97, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Senior Constant Care in Sykesville, MD.
He was born August 27, 1916 in Carroll County, Marston, Maryland, the son of the late Clarence Levi Manahan and the late Viola Bond Manahan.
He was the husband of the late Madeline V. Manahan (nee Shipley) who died in 2008.
He served in the Army, stationed at Camp Waters, Texas.
Early in his life he was a carpenter and builder. Later he owned and operated Manahan Insurance and Real Estate. After retirement he enjoyed making wood craft projects for craft shows and flea markets.
He was an avid Oriole and Ravens Fan and a Champion Checker player in his youth. He was still playing checkers and winning most of the time up until 2 weeks before his death.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Faye and Wayne Ruch of Sykesville, daughter and son in law Doris Lee and George Rohrbough of Alexandria, PA, daughters and sons-in-law Norma Jean and Ed Wentz, Anna Mae and Larry Bowman all of Hanover, PA. Rose Marie and John Hain of Chattanooga, Tenn. And sister Bernetta Arrington of Taneytown, MD, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers Griffith, Lavere and Wolford Manahan and a son Charles “Chuck” Manahan who died in February 1993.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with Rev. Arthur Monroe officiating.
Interment Evergreen Memorial Park, Finksburg, MD.
Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA on Sunday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM.
