Irvin Magin

Irvin D. Magin, age 83, who worked as a mapping specialist for the Central Intelligence Agency for 30 years before retiring in 1988, died Sunday, May 29, 2016 at his home in Broadway, VA. As a research analyst with the agency's map library in Langley, VA he was affectionately known as the "Map Man". Born on January 30, 1933 in Baltimore, MD he was the son of the late E. Fred Magin and Mary E. (Franklin) Magin. Growing up in Westminster, MD he graduated High School in 1951 and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served from 1951-1954 including a tour in Korea. He was a member of one of the Corps' most feared and respected operations groups, "Remington's Raiders", from which he was discharged as a sergeant. Following discharge he graduated from Washington State University in 1958 with a degree in Geography. A long-time resident of Frederick, MD, upon retirement he settled near New Market, VA on Massanutten, Mountain. During retirement he served the Shenandoah County Library and its affiliate New Market Area Library. He was the author of the library's "Shenandoah County Gazetteer and Historical Geography". His continued interest in things geographic and historic allowed him to produce a trivia piece on both World War II and of Shenandoah County. His greatest personal achievement was in the completion of a gazetteer of unusual place names in the U.S. with particular emphasis on those names born of the American Indian. Irvin is survived by two children, Erik D. Quanbeck of Port Byron, NY and Tracy Magin Sorg of Fort Collins, CO. He is also survived by six grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, June 25, 2016 11 AM at BURRIER-QUEEN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784.
