James “Jim” Archie Leary, 94 of Winfield, MD passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, peacefully at his home.
Born April 9, 1929, in Grafton, WV. He was the fifth son of seven sons of the late Charles William Leary and the late Lillie Mae (nee Hewitt) Leary.
James was a retired teacher with 41 years in the MD school system. James graduated from Belington High in 1948, and Fairmont State College in 1952, with a BA Degree in Education. He was drafted into the Army in August 1952 at Fort Meade, MD. He received Basic training at Fort Knox, KY and radio training with the Signal Corp. Later Jim was assigned to Radar Schooling at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He served a 1-year tour of duty overseas in Asia as a counter measure search specialist; and was discharged in 1954.
He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland at College Park, MD in 1965. Jim also attended Davis Elkins, WV, and Towson College.
Jim was a member of the VFW post 410 Laural Mt., WV, the American Legion Post 191, Mt. Airy, MD and Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Jim also worked for Burrier-Queen Funeral Home part time for 27 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 68 years, Doris (nee Fitzwater) Leary; are his daughter Beverly Ann McCardle and husband Stephen of Frederick, MD, son Philip David Leary and wife Caryn, of Westminster, and daughter in law Deirdre Leary of Eldersburg, MD. Also survived by seven grandchildren, Jody, Heather, Lauren, Ryan, Benjamin, Andrew, and Elizabeth, and eight great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jemma, Jase, Brooks, Dash, Windsor, Mackenzie and Kennedy; and his younger brother Edward of Parkersburg, WV.
He was preceded in death by his son Stephen Paul Leary, and five brothers Charles, John, Frank, Bill, and Leslie.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 3 PM at Ebenezer United Methodist Church 4901 Woodbine Road Sykesville, MD 21784.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bridging Life Caroll Hospice or Ebenezer United Methodist Church Building Fund.
