James “Jim” Gray Phelps, Jr., age 85, of Sykesville, died Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Carroll Hospice, Inc.-Dove House in Westminster, MD.
He was born September 6, 1929 in Richmond, VA.
He was predeceased in death by his parents late James Gray Phelps, Sr. and the late Lucy Rowe Rowley Phelps and a daughter the late Diana Lynn Smith.
Husband of Trevor S. Phelps (nee Spiers) of 47 years.
Survived by children, James G. Phelps III and wife Sandy, Patricia Evans and husband Richard, Sean L. Phelps and wife Renae, Richard Powell and wife Christine, Susan Isensee and husband Steven, Rebecca O’Toole and husband Kevin; two brothers and two sisters from Richmond, VA; 11 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1953 until his retirement he was a Nationwide Tractor-trailer driver. He was a member of the Million Mile Club and received numerous safety awards. He found great satisfaction in assisting stranded motorists while traveling. Jim was a Deacon Emeritus of Elders Baptist Church in Eldersburg.
Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville (Beside South Carroll High School) on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 3:00-5:00 PM. Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Elders Baptist Church, 1216 Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 with Rev. Chad Grisham officiating, Interment will be Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 10:45 AM at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.
