Janet Bernice Warren Welsh, age 88, passed away at her home in Hampstead, Maryland on November 30, 2023. Alzheimer’s disease caused her decline, but during her battle against this cruel disease, she never forgot how to smile and always knew she was loved by her family, friends, and caregivers.
Janet was born in Lyons Mill, MD, at her parents’ home, on August 29, 1935. She was the daughter of the late James Albert Warren, Sr., and the late Esther Marie (Yox) Warren. In 1959, she married George Waterman Welsh, Jr., whom she met when they attended Milford Mill High School. George and Janet were blessed to share a beautiful 64-year marriage. In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by their three children and their spouses, Jannell (Jeff) Sloan of Ninety Six, SC; Pam (Roland) Nickoles of Hampstead, MD; and George “Chip” Welsh (Karen) of Towson, MD; eight grandchildren: Steven (Caitlin) Sloan, Shawn (Jennifer) Sloan, Kevin (Nicole) Nickoles, Brandon Sloan, Cole Nickoles, George R. Welsh, Jr., William Welsh, and Jenna Welsh; and six great-grandchildren: Aleena, Oliver, Sophia, Eloise, Bennett, and Cameron. Janet is also survived by one loving sister, Judy Watson, and was pre-deceased by a sister, Esther “Annette” Tracey, and one brother, James Warren, Jr.
Janet lived a busy life full of love, laughter, and adventure! After high school, she attended Towson State Junior College, from 1953-1955, in order to qualify for her dream job of becoming a flight attendant. She became an airline hostess for TWA and absolutely loved flying, seeing the world, and meeting interesting people on her flights. She left this career when she and George married and started their family. They moved to Randallstown where they lived on Chapman Road for 56 years and raised their 3 children. Janet always loved sports and became a referee for girls’ & women’s sports at the high school and college levels. She was a referee for field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and softball and was actively involved, for over 20 years, with the Baltimore Board of Officials for Women’s Sports. Janet also enjoyed a long career in the insurance industry, working for the Layton Company in Pikesville as a personal lines representative.
Janet loved family camping trips when her kids were young, beach vacations, playing bridge, and traveling with George. Janet and George visited many sites around the world and especially enjoyed cruises to Alaska and the Greek Islands.
St. Mark’s on-the-Hill Episcopal Church in Pikesville was an important fixture in Janet’s life. She was a faithful, lifelong member of St. Mark’s where she served on the altar guild and vestry. Janet and George were instrumental in establishing a food pantry at St. Mark’s to serve those in need in the Pikesville area. Janet’s faith was evidenced by her kindness and generosity. Her family recalls that they never knew who might join them at the Thanksgiving dinner table; if Janet met someone who didn’t have a home or a place for Thanksgiving dinner, she would invite them to her table. She was truly a servant of the Lord!
Janet was a beautiful role model of love and compassion who helped guide and mold the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and, especially, by those who loved her. According to Janet’s wishes and arrangements, her body was donated to science. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Janet’s memory is asked to send donations to St. Mark’s On-The-Hill Church:
