Jean S. Smith
Jean Smith (nee Szulc), 84, of Mount Airy, MD formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD,
passed away at The Lorien, Mt. Airy on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Jean was born October
28, 1938 in Whately, Massachusetts the daughter of the late Walter Szulc and the late
Mary Szulc (nee Hutkoski). When Jean was in her early 20’s she moved to Washington,
DC and worked as a secretary in the Dept of Commerce during President Kennedy’s
term in office. She soon married and was the beloved wife of Harry R. Smith Sr. for 39
years. Jean’s life was dedicated to her marriage, raising her family and serving the Lord.
She was an active member of The Ladies of Charity at Mount Calvary Catholic Church
in Forestville, MD for many years. After moving to Carroll County in 2010, Jean was a
devoted volunteer at the Lorien, Mount Airy where she spent her time visiting and
encouraging the patients and residents and assisting with the weekly activities as well as
the monthly Catholic Mass.
Surviving Jean is her sister, Barbara Iazzetti (nee Szulc) and husband Armando. Her
children, Harry Smith Jr., Steven Smith Sr. and his wife Mary, Linda Frazier and husband
George. Grandchildren Betsy, Steven, Hannah, Claire, Aimee, Emily, Lexy, Olivia, Neil,
Gabriel, Ryan and numerous great grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her husband
Harry R. Smith Sr., brother Eric Szulc and daughter Christine M. Heerd.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at Saint Michael Catholic Church,
1125 St. Michael’s Road, Mount Airy, Maryland 21771 at 12:00 pm on Thursday July 6,
2023 with Interment immediately following at Saint Michael Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Saint Michael Catholic Church from 11:00am to
12:00pm directly before the Mass on 7/6/23.
