Jeffrey Bordeaux Smith, 90, passed away on June 17, 2017 at the Fairhaven Health Center in Sykesville, Maryland. He is survived by his wife, Ninita (Barkman) Smith of Sykesville; his son, Jeffrey B. Smith, Jr., of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania; his daughters, Rev. Jennifer J.S. Brooks, of Columbus, Ohio; Holly Smith-Berry of Fulton, Missouri; Wendy Phillips of Pikesville, Maryland and Julie Peatt Cassaday of Westminster, Maryland; and ten grandchildren.
He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 5, 1926 to Frank Hurd Smith and Emma (Brouilette) Smith. He is preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Erway, and brother, Vernon M. Smith, Sr..
After serving in the Army Air Corp, he attended Western Maryland College and the University of Maryland Law School. He was inducted into the Maryland Bar Association in 1951 and later became a partner at Smith, Somerville and Case in Baltimore. He was an accomplished and highly-respected civil trial lawyer. During his long career he served as President of the Junior Bar Association; President of the Bar Association of Baltimore City; and ultimately, President of the Maryland State Bar Association (1983-1984). Following his retirement from the firm in 1990, he remained active in the Maryland and American Bar Associations.
He was active in many civic organizations, including the community association of Sudbrook Park, where he and his family resided for 51 years; Parent Teacher Associations where his five children attended school; the Milford Mill United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, and the Monocacy Canoe Club.
In addition to being a loving father and devoted husband, he was a private pilot and an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed camping, hiking, hunting and canoeing. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Carribean and Europe. He and his wife, “Nita,” made three trips to Alaska in their RV.
He was known for his integrity and eloquence. His respect for the rules of etiquette and his keen sense of humor never failed him, even during the last decade of his life as he battled Alzheimer’s disease. He was an inspiration to his family, friends, caregivers, and those who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Fairhaven Chapel, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville, MD., 21784, presided over by the Rev. Edie Holton.
