John Devault

John "Jack” William Devault 82 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Friday October 19, 2012 at Kline Hospice House. He was the husband of 60 years to Juanita Marie (Shirley) Devault. Mr. Devault was born December 22, 1929 in Cumberland, MD the son of the late Harold Thomas Devault and the late Erma Pauline (Bone) Devault. He is a US Navy Veteran, served in Korea aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1950-1954. Mr. Devault was a graduate of Allegany High School Class of 1950. He received his BS from Frostburg St. College and his Master’s in Education from George Washington University in 1963. Mr. Devault started his career in education at Mt. Airy Middle School in 1959 Became Vice Principal of Westminster Jr. High in 1965, 1966 he was Vice Principle in Charge of Administration at Mt. Airy Senior High, 1967 Principle of Mt. Airy Elementary School and was Principle of Mt. Airy Middle School from 1974 until his retirement in 1990. He Coached Mt. Airy Little League Baseball as well as Mt. Airy Woman’s Softball. He enjoyed Bowling and playing golf. He was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church where he taught Senior Sunday School and was Senior MYF Leader. He was a Mentor for their conformation Classes. A Greeter and an Usher and was responsible for setting up Communion for the 8 AM Service. Mr. Devault was a Member of Mt. Airy American Legion Gold Star Post 190, Past President and Treasurer of Mt Airy Kiwanis Club. A Life Member of MD State Teachers Association, Member of State and National Association of Secondary School Principals, Past President of Carroll County Teachers Association. Surviving in addition to his wife are Daughters and Son-in-laws Diane M and Michael Hughes of Monrovia, Cheryl A. and Stephen Smith of Mt. Airy, Granddaughter Sara M. Smith and Grandson David M. Hughes. Preceded in death by Brother Harold James Devault. Funeral Services will take place Tuesday, October 23, 2012 10 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784. Interment will be on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 12 Noon at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 10901 Mason Rd. N.E. Cumberland, MD 21502. The Family will receive friends on Monday October 22, 2012 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Funeral Home. There will be a American Legion Memorial Service 7:30 Monday during the viewing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary UMC 403 S. Main Street, Mt. Airy, MD 21771.
