John Simpson Sieg, age 94, of Ellicott City, Maryland, died Monday November 8th, 2021 at Carroll County Hospital Dove House hospice.

He was born on 8 November 1927 in Scranton, Pa., the son of the late Kenneth Marsh Sieg and the late Esther Elizabeth (Simpson) Sieg. He was devoted to his wife of 53 years, Barbara, and leaves behind his loving family; sons John Jr., Patrick, Christopher, Bill and Justin; grandchildren Brandon, Drew, Emily, Robert, Erica, Stephan, Avery, Max, Colby, Cassius, Frederick, Stewart, and Katie; great-grandchildren Leona and Mallory.

He attended Yale University, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1950, earned his MS in nuclear engineering from U.S. Air Force and subsequently earned a J.D. law degree from University of Baltimore. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1959 and went on to work with Martin Marietta, the Department of Energy (AEC) and finally consulting with DOE.
During his time with Martin Marietta, he was stationed in McMurdo Station, Antarctica, from February 1963 through February 1964. While there, he was responsible for the assembly and operations of a small nuclear reactor prior to its acceptance by the AEC. He enjoyed his affiliation with Maryland Collector’s Arms and his consulting work with Meta-Bgr. He and Barbara also enjoyed their extensive worldwide travel and reunions with Yale alumni.

Favorite activities of the self-proclaimed “The Antarctic Fox” included investing in the stock market/options, the collecting of coins and militaria, writing and chess. He had a sharp mind and often would recite poems or passages from the classics and from his own creation. He had a great love for dogs and fondly remembered his pets.
Celebration of life service will be held on November 19, 2021 at 2:30 PM at The chapel at Fairhaven 7200 Third Ave Sykesville, MD 21784. (Please check service location and time the day of the service.)
