Joyce Mathis, 78, of Sykesville, MD died Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Carroll Hospital Center. Joyce was the spouse of the late Dewey Mathis. She was born July 10, 1939 in Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Frank James & the late Gladys Weaver (nee Yauger).
Joyce held several employment positions over her lifetime including being a nanny, a bookkeeper, a homemaker and an apartment housekeeper. If you were to ask “Mumsie” or “Mum-Mum”, though, the job she was here to do first & foremost was being a Mother. She cherished being a Mom and encouraged her children & grandchildren to follow their dreams, to pursue success, and most of all, happiness.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Denise Beltran, 48, of Hampstead, MD and her son, Kenny Mathis, 42, of Glen Burnie, MD. Survived by her daughter, Kim Edson (& her fiancé, Mike Cavaliere) of Sykesville, MD; Grandchildren, Candice Mathis of Long Beach, CA, Chris (& Beth) Edson of Mt. Airy, MD, Cassie Edson (& her fiancé, Craig Roberts) of Hendersonville, NC, Lindsey Mathis of Woodbine, MD, “Bink” Edson of Sykesville, MD and her Great-Grandson, Jack Henry of Mt. Airy, MD.
Sister of the late Dolores Mercer of Lexington Park, MD, the late Bud James of Richmond, VA, the late Harold James of Hagerstown, Jerri (& Jack) Salyers of La Plata, MD, Patty (& Bob) Broskey of Keistersville, PA, Ben (& Judy) Weaver of New Windsor, MD, Debbie (& Wally) Buxmann of Littleton, CO, and Vicki (& Dennis)Foy of Kearneysville, WV.
