Lonnie Hamer Wright ("Pop")
April 3, 1923 – September 29, 2024
Lonnie Hamer Wright, lovingly known as "Pop," of New Windsor, Maryland, was born on April 3, 1923, in McColl, South Carolina, to Jennie Lee Vereen and Jason R. Ward and was adopted and raised by his stepfather, "Rob" Wright. On September 29, 2024, with his children by his side, Lonnie was called home to Heaven to be with his Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
A man of steadfast faith, he deeply believed in salvation through Christ alone and never hesitated to share that truth with others. His life was a testament to unwavering trust in the Lord, always glorifying Him despite life’s circumstances. Daily he studied God’s Word where he found renewed strength, wisdom, and peace to endure the race set before him. His prayers were always filled with gratitude and his heart with praise as he could often be heard expressing a loud (with that South Carolina accent), “Thank Ya, Lord, Thank Ya.” His love for hymns ran deep, and the timeless melodies of his favorite songs of praise never failed to lift his spirit. He cherished his close bond and fellowship with his pastor and church family while attending Calvary Baptist Church in Westminster, MD.
He was a hardworking man who found purpose not only in his career but also in everyday tasks, serving others, and loving his family. After working various jobs from a young age, he worked as a Master Machinist at Maryland Glass Corporation for 38 years where he met his sweetheart, Darlene, and was eventually blessed with a beautiful family of six. He then spent many years as bus driver for Arlington Baptist School and continued his career as a Security Officer at Giant Food, finally retiring at the age of 78. After retirement, he took pleasure in having more time to do things like mow the lawn, wash the dishes, take out the garbage, or anything that involved supporting and loving his family. He adored his family and will be greatly missed by them all.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darlene Marie Wright, his sons, Robert Allen Wright and Roger Lee Wright, and his grandson, Michael Distefano Wright. He is survived by his son, Lonnie Michael Wright, Sr., of Mt. Airy, MD, and his daughter, Ann Marie Rose, and her husband, Tony, of New Windsor, MD. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kelly Henry (and Matt), Lonnie Wright Jr., Jason Wright (and Katrina), Abigail Wade (and Joseph), Tyler Rose (and Faith), Matthew Rose, Benjamin Wright, and Zoey Davis, as well as his great-grandchildren, Caraline Wright, and Graham Wright.
His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now with Jesus, reunited with his loved ones in Heaven, where he will “sing and shout the jubilee” for all eternity!
