Madeline Edna Kenny, aged 99, of Mt. Airy, Maryland entered eternal life Saturday, September 14, 2024, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born November 7, 1924, in Mt. Airy, Maryland to Raymond Thomas Dorsey and Martha Elizabeth Dotson Dorsey. Madeline married Charles Edward Kenny in June of 1942, who preceded her in death in June of 1994. Together, they raised four children. Madeline’s eldest child, Eugene E. Kenny passed away in 2002. Her second eldest, Ronald M. Kenny, was killed in the Vietnam War in 1966. She was also preceded in death by her sister Myrtle E. Dorsey Rose and her brother Maurice E. Dorsey.
Madeline attended Robert Moton in Westminster, Maryland when schools were segregated. She later worked as a nurse’s aide at Springfield State Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1977. Madeline attended Warren United Methodist (UM) Church for most of her life until it closed in 2007. In the early 1980’s, Madeline founded The Warren Players—a theatrical group that became well known in the community for their plays. Madeline and The Warren Players put on about ten different plays over the years. After Warren UM closed their doors, Madeline returned to the church she attended as a child, Fairview United Methodist Church. Madeline’s Fairview Church family lovingly called her, “Mother Kenny.”
Madeline deeply loved her family and friends. She especially loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Madeline enjoyed watching religious programming and particularly liked listening to gospel music. She liked doing crossword puzzles, word scrambles, and word searches. Madeline’s family loved her cooking and baking. Her vegetable beef soup, homemade rolls, lemon meringue, chocolate, and apple pies, pancakes, and homemade root beer could never be duplicated.
Madeline is survived by her two daughters, Barbara S. Kenny Dorsey and Deborah E. Kenny, and her son-in-law, Charles R. Dorsey, all of Mt. Airy, MD. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ronald Hawkins of Eldersburg, MD; Eugenia Thompson of Mt. Airy, MD; Kimberly E. Kenny Dorsey of Mt. Airy, MD; great-grandchildren Michael, Maryn, Norah, and Ronny; special nieces Yvonne Ryan and Mary Ann Brown of Baltimore, MD; and a host of other family and friends.
“A flower is sweet, but not as sweet as the touch of a mother’s hand. It’s the perfect thing, the magic thing that all can understand.”
