Mark Allen Slater, 59, passed away at Carroll Hospice Dove House on February 3rd, 2021 after a year-long battle with colon cancer.
Born July 13, 1961, he grew up in Parkville, Maryland and had lived in Westminster for 23 years. He was the son of the late Norman and Isabelle Slater of Parkville. Mark attended Parkville High School and Washington College. He held a master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono.
Mark is survived by his children Amber and Grant Slater and their mother Gail Slater of Westminster. He is also survived by two brothers and their families, Matthew Slater of Bel Air, Maryland and Norman Slater of Tampa, Florida. Many devoted friends and family members stayed in touch during the last year, which was an isolating and difficult time to be sick.
For thirty years, Mark worked in publishing with the H.M. Rowe Company in Baltimore. He started as an editor and was president of the privately-owned company when it closed. He then worked for the city of Westminster Recreation and Parks for a year before beginning a second career as a supervisor at UPS in Hunt Valley. He worked nights as the trucks were loaded, and used to say it was a beautiful sight to see the sun come up and all the brown trucks rolling out in the morning.
Mark was a lacrosse coach for Westminster Area Lacrosse (WAX), Winters Mill High School, and Maryland Express, an international exchange program. He ran the Pockets program for age four to six-year-old children and was Boys Coordinator with WAX for many years. Mark was also a lacrosse referee and was the driving force behind major tournaments, devoting many hours of his time. He was passionate about passing along his love of the game and instrumental in the lives of countless Carroll County lacrosse players.
Mark enjoyed fishing and spent some of his last healthy months at the beach with his friend Jerry Diem. He was an avid writer and reader, a great cook, talented gardener, and birdwatcher. He was known as a hard worker and a straight shooter.

For those who would like to share stories and memories, please contact the family by Saturday as his daughter Amber is coordinating the event. Burial will be private. An in-person celebration of life is being planned for July 13th, 2021, which would have been his 60th birthday.
For donations in Mark’s memory, a gift to the Mark Slater College Scholarship Fund for WAX alumni would be very meaningful. This fund is administered through Carroll County Recreation & Parks, and checks can be sent to Mark Slater Scholarship Fund c/o Carroll County Recreation & Parks at 300 S. Center Street Westminster, MD 21157.
Arrangements by Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. Online Condolences at www.Burrier-Queen.com.

Hi everyone. This is a quick clarification about the scholarship fund mentioned in Mark's obituary. Checks need to be made out to FOCRP (Friends of Carroll Recreation and Parks) and on the memo line "designated to Mark Slater Scholarship Fund". Donations will benefit Westminster Area Lacrosse alumni headed to college. (WAX is part of Rec and Parks and that's why this way). Thanks for all the kind words. 💖
