Martha Evelyn Pope Clay, 96, of Mt. Airy, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 , at Citizens Care & Rehabilitation Center in Frederick. Born Martha Evelyn Gartrell, May 30, 1921 in Plane #4, Mt. Airy, she was the daughter of the late Howard G. Gartrell and the late Mamie E. Murphy Gartrell. She was the wife of the late Charles Henry Pope, Sr. for 33 years and the ex-wife of the late Paul Barnum Clay.
Surviving are sons, Charles H. Pope, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Hagerstown; Howard N. Pope and wife Carolyn of Martinsburg, WV; William E. Pope and wife Donna of Mt. Airy; and David E. Pope of Essex, MD; stepchildren Dale Clay, Barry Clay and Bonnie Clancy. Also surviving are sisters: June Wagner, and Dorothy Watkins, and sister-in-law Libby Gartrell. A brother, Howard Gartrell, sister, Bettie Hall, daughter Nancy L. Hahn and step-son Thomas G. Clay preceded her in death. Surviving also, are 24 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was a waitress at Tom and Ray’s Restaurant in Damascus, and later worked at the National Geographic Society, from which she retired.
She was a long-time and active member of Marvin Chapel Church. Evelyn loved to sing, and she sang with the church choir and “The Singing Seniors”, who entertained at the Lorien Center and for other functions in the community. Never one to idle, she belonged to many clubs and organizations such as the Mt. Airy and New Market Seniors, the Mt. Airy Red Hattitudes, the “55” Plus Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. She also loved to cook and bake and enjoyed fixing “big dinners” for her family, to whom she was devoted.
There will be a viewing from 3pm to 5pm and from7pm until 9pm at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home in Winfield on Wednesday, July 26. Funeral services will be held at Marvin Chapel Church on Thursday, July 27, at 11:00 AM, with one hour of viewing prior to the service. Interment Marvin Chapel Cemetery.
