Michael (Mike) Karolchik, age 87, of Mt. Airy, MD, and formerly of Ebensburg, PA, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at his home.
He was born July 25, 1925, in Edwardsville, PA, the son of the late John Karolchik and the late Mary Shimko Karolchik, and brother of 8 siblings. Mike was the husband of Betty Karolchik (nee Scott), married on Sept. 7, 1950.
Mike was the director of counseling for Westmont Hilltop High School, Westmont, PA, the music director for Cambria Heights (John Carroll) High School, Patton, PA, and a college instructor. He ran a musical instrument repair business well into his retirement. He attended Indiana University of PA, Penn State University, and University of Buffalo. He served as a radioman-gunner on a Helldiver aboard the USS Intrepid during World War II. Mike was a member of the PA Music Educators, American Personnel and Guidance Assoc., Winnebago-Itasca Travelers, National Campers and Hikers Assoc, and Kiwanis International. He particularly enjoyed camping with his family and friends, gardening, and working on his home computer, was a talented artist and musician, and an active member of the Mt. Airy Senior Center and local Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife Betty of Mt. Airy, MD, daughter Donna Karolchik of Santa Cruz, CA, sons Michael Karolchik of Morgantown, WV, and Joseph Karolchik of Woodbine, MD, and grandsons Michael and Zachary Karolchik of Morgantown, WV.
A memorial service and reception will be held 12:00 p.m. on Tues. June 11, 2013, in the chapel at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1125 St. Michael’s Rd, Poplar Springs, MD, officiated by Rev. Michael J. Ruane. Private inurnment at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills, MD.
