Millard Dale Taylor, Sr of Cooksville, MD passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the age of 93.

Dale is the beloved husband of Arlene Taylor (nee Hurley). Dale and Arlene were married for 58 years at the time of his passing. He loved to tell the story of how and when he and Arlene met, and how she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Dale’s eyes lit up and glowed when he told this story. He constantly talked about how he and Arlene had a really great life together.

He was born November 28, 1927 in Murphy, NC, the son of the late Ralph Owen Taylor and the late Gladys Hall Taylor. He loved to tell stories of Ralph, Gladys, his grandparents and growing up on their farm. Dale would frequently tell stories of him and his brothers plowing the fields and processing the animals they raised and hunted to put food on their table. It was the proverbial ‘walking bare foot through the snow uphill both ways to and from school, such as the one room schoolhouse was’ story for many of that era.

At the age of 16, Dale enlisted in the Merchant Marines and at the age of 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He was in both World War II and the Korean War (Conflict as it was previously known), during which he served multiple tours. He earned several military citations and awards, including a Purple Heart.

After the injuries he sustained, Dale could have been medically discharged. Instead, he volunteered to return to the War. His combat history includes the legendary Battle at Chosin Reservoir, known as one of the top battles in the history of the Marine Corps. Dale was one of the last remaining “Chosin Frozen” Marines. He proudly wore his Korean War baseball cap everywhere he went and was honored every time someone acknowledged him and thanked him for his service. He was a true Marine, he loved the United States of America and was both proud and honored to have served his country. Semper Fi.

Dale graduated with his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy from Golden Gate University in 1958. He retired from Security Storage Company in Washington D.C. as the Comptroller and Assistant Treasurer. As stated in a Security Storage Company of Washington office publication in Spring 1972 “Dale… is the man behind our friendly computer from whom you receive your bills. Dale, a former boxer in the Marines has our Accounting Department well under control.”

Dale was a 32nd degree Mason and had been a member of the Columbia-Brotherhood Masonic Lodge in San Francisco, CA since the 1950s. He had also been a member of the Scottish Rite Society in Washington, DC since the 1970s. He loyally paid his dues to both and followed their publications continuously.

Dale enjoyed spending time with Arlene, collecting and repairing clocks and watches, collecting coins and tinkering around the house. His daily ritual included reading the Washington Post cover to cover and he stayed current on everything from local news to politics. Dale taught himself how to play the stock market and continued to follow stocks, whether he owned them or not. He also loved to tell stories and brag about each and every one of his grand and great grandchildren, always focusing on the best qualities and how he recognized certain traits and aspects of himself in them (and recognizing the ‘contrary’ aspects with a smile on his face).

Surviving him are his beautiful wife, Arlene, his sons Edward Dale Taylor, Steven Craig Taylor, Douglas James Taylor, Millard Dale Taylor Jr, and Dean Hilton Taylor, and their respective spouses and families.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Herbert Vernon Taylor and Gene Hilton Taylor, and his son Dwight Glenn Taylor.
