Nilo Vidi

Nilo Louis Vidi, 89 of Woodbine, a life long knife and tool grinder (moleta) died peacefully July 28th at home after a short illness. Nilo was born September 17, 1927 in Pinzolo Italy, a small village in the Italian Alps. He was the son of the late Pietro and Maria (Ferrari) Vidi and the husband of the late Mary Cole Vidi. Pietro Vidi came to the United States in 1907 and began the family grinding business, Vidi and Sons. Nilo arrived in Baltimore via Ellis Island in 1935 at the age of 8 with his mother and siblings. He joined the business at age 15, pushing a cart with a grindstone through the streets of Baltimore sharpening tools and knives for restaurants, homemakers, chefs and other business owners. Mr. Vidi’s father always told his four sons, “learn the skill of knife grinding’” His father would sit next to him on the truck to teach Nilo the “right way’ to grind knives. A proud veteran of WWII, he served in the Army from March 1946 through April 1947. After serving in the military, he returned to Baltimore to work in the grinding business. After the death of their father the business was divided; Nilo and his brother Pietro (Pete) renamed their portion of the business Vidi Brothers. Mr. Vidi retired in 1987 at the age of 60, however he remained active in the business. To this day the Vidi Moleta business (Vidi Cutlery, Inc.) is owned and operated by his sons, grandsons and other Vidi family members. Survivors include children and spouses: David and Charlene Vidi, Diane and Chuck Sporer, Denise Scherer, Janice and David Zablocki, Sr., Paul and Karen Vidi, 10 Grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by son Louis Vidi, daughter-in-law Anna Vidi, son-in-law Barry Scherer, grandson Nicholas Vidi and longtime companion Ruby Logue. Viewings will be held Thursday August 3, at 2 p.m to 4 p.m and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Burrier Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W Old Liberty Road Winfield, MD. 21784. A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday August 4, at 10 a.m., St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 915 Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.
