Patricia "Pat" Louise Barnhart, 77, passed away peacefully at Sun Valley at Ridge Overlook in Westminster on Sunday, October 31, 2021; Born in Watersville, MD on May 25, 1944, to the late Charles and Helen Warfield, she was predeceased by sister Margaret (Peggy) Dorsey, and husband of 49 years, Kenneth Barnhart. She is lovingly remembered by brothers George and Larry Warfield, son Mark (Sarah), step-daughter Bridget Wilhelm, grandchildren Vera and Susannah Barnhart, Angie Mathis (Billy), and Tyler Wilhelm (Emily), great-grandchildren Brody and Cooper Mathis, and Ava Wilhelm, plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Pat graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1962 then worked for Geico Insurance for many years before marrying in 1971 and becoming a mother and homemaker. She delighted in fixing up and redecorating the small farm that she and her husband purchased in 1976, where they lived for more than 40 years.
Long before baking shows were all the rage, Pat was the family baker. Making cakes from scratch and decorating them herself. From elaborate three tier wedding cakes with handmade icing flowers to cupcakes and cookies for church bake sales—if it could be baked, Pat could make it. And birthday cakes… Pat couldn’t just make a simple birthday cake. Each was an inspired, one-of-a-kind creation such as a bowling pin shaped cake for her sportsman father, a race track cake complete with toy race cars for her son's 10th birthday and, for her Star Wars fan nephew, a spherical, freestanding Death Star cake.
Pat competed a few times in the 'demolition derby’ that was held annually at the Great Frederick Fair, the object of which was to smash as many other cars as possible and be the last one moving. One year she hit her head on the stirring wheel and needed to be examined by the on-duty physician. She assured everyone that she was ok to get back in the car, but first she had to “catch all of her baby duckies that were running around”… She was not allowed to drive again that night.
Always the caregiver, Pat worked many years with a service driving elderly individuals for an adult daycare facility in Carroll County. Referring to them as “my old people”, she did more than just drive, she very much enjoyed caring for them in her own way. She knew them all by name and what each person needed to feel at ease. She would also painstakingly decorate the inside of the van for every holiday bringing a little joy into their day.
Pat had always dreamed of traveling the world and embarked on many international excursions with family and friends to destinations including Greece, Australia, touring eastern Europe shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain and an Alaskan cruise where she was the only one in her group to take a helicopter flight to hike on a glacier.
An accomplished seamstress, Pat made many of her own outfits and clothes for family including insulated vests that her father and brothers wore for many years during hunting trips, and many custom designed costumes for her son based on his favorite TV shows at the time.
