Richard Alfred Roy, age 92 of Westminster, MD, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Carroll Hospice/Dove House in Westminster, MD.
He was born January 24, 1924, in Worcester, MA, the son of the late Alfred Roy & the late Anne (nee Keating) Roy.
He was the beloved husband of Frances Virginia (Ginny) Roy, his wife of 65 years.
He was educated in the MA Public School System prior to entering military service in WW II. He was a Navigator on B-24 bombers in the Army Air Corps, where he flew numerous combat missions over German occupied Europe. His bomber was shot down over Italy and he was a prisoner of War in a German Prison camp, until he was liberated at the end of the war in Europe. He was the senior officer in the prison camp, at the time, and the Germans surrendered the camp to him. He was awarded numerous combat decorations including the Purple Heart. After the service he served in the Army Reserves at a rank of Captain. He graduated from Boston University and worked his entire career for the Federal Government, SSA, until retiring after 30 years of service.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his 5 children; Kathleen Harvey & husband Don, Michael Roy & wife Linda, Joanne Jones & husband Pete, David Roy & wife Margie, and John Roy and his late wife Sandra. Also survived by 13 grandchildren; Kevin Roy, Danie Ridgway & husband Adam, Christine Applewhite & husband Douglas, Kerri Davis & husband Justin, Kelly Louviere & husband Chris, Bryan Roy & wife Emily, Drew Engles, Thomas Harvey & wife Ashley, Kenneth Roy, Timothy Harvey & wife Tori, Mary Oswald & husband Mike, Shannon Roy & Alex Roy; and 10 great-grandchildren Isabella, Sullivan, Brennan, William, Sloane, Ava, Reid, Laine, and Corbin and Bodie; brother of Lorraine A. Roy and the late Helen J. Graham.
Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road., Sykesville, MD 21784 (BESIDE SOUTH CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL) on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM; with a Vigil Wake Service at 7:30 PM.
Funeral Liturgy (MASS) will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, MD 21157.
Interment with Full Military Honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
