Robert Hugh Hardesty (1942 - 2025)
Robert “Bobby” Hardesty of Chambersburg, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday February 23, 2025. He was 83. Born in 1942 in Washington, DC, he spent much of his youth in St. Mary’s County, MD. He served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964, receiving an honorable discharge. He then worked for the Montgomery County (MD) Fire & Rescue Service, continuing a life of public service until his retirement in 1988.
He was an active member of the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department in Carroll County, MD where he received numerous awards. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents Bud and Margaret (Peacock) Hardesty, brother Larry Hardesty, and nephew Charles Hardesty. He is survived by his sister-in-law Mary (Hardesty) Smith and niece Marlene (Hardesty) Cruite. Bobby was married twice; First to Elizabeth Jean (Skinner) Oakes (deceased) with stepson Fred Oakes Jr (deceased) and his wife Peggy Oakes and grandson Daniel Oakes; and stepdaughter Jeanie Oakes and granddaughter Holly Pelton. He is survived by his second wife Carole Smith-Hardesty; stepson Matthew Smith and his wife Susan and grandchildren Ryan, Connor, and Nolan; and stepson Mark Smith and his wife Kendra and grandchildren Brian, Grace, and Justin.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday March 30, 2025, beginning at 9:30 am at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home located at 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784. A reception will follow at the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm at the Laytonsville Cemetery (located next to St. Paul United Methodist Church) at 21720 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville, MD 20882.
