Robert Walter Ziehm, 83 of Woodbine, died, Tuesday, April 25, 2017, peacefully at home after battling pancreatic cancer. A devoted family man, he was the loving husband of Georgia (Dove) Ziehm and the beloved father of Michele Ojason of Baltimore, Melinda (and James) Ittenbach of Laurel, Amanda (and Paul) Sachtleben of Frederick, and Laura (and Erik) Anderson of Baltimore. Ashley Hanavin Eder (and Kevin Eder), Alex Hanavin, Adeline Sachtleben, Jonah Sachtleben and Emilie Anderson were his cherished grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Phyllis Cearfoss and son-in-law Neil Ojason.
Bob was the son of previously deceased Walter and Stella (Schlueter) Ziehm of Catonsville, Maryland and was the beloved son-in-law of Georgia E. Dove and previously deceased Wilber A. Dove of Woodbine. He was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church for over 45 years, serving in many capacities there.
He proudly joined the Navy in 1952 with active duty service at Chincoteague Naval Air Station in Virginia, working on communication systems on drones and chase planes and then remained in the Naval Reserves until 1960. He pursued an early career in electrical engineering, working at several Maryland companies and graduating from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1968. He retired as the Howard County Soil Conservation District Manager after 28 years of service in 2000. During his tenure working with farmers, homeowners and developers, much of Howard County transitioned from rural to urban with the growth of Columbia.
Throughout his life he loved to learn new things and taught himself computer technology from its early beginnings, with a special interest in computer security. A skilled and passionate do-it-yourselfer, he performed home renovations and repairs of cars, tools and equipment for many of his family members, as well as building dollhouses, swing sets and sandboxes for children and grandchildren through the years. He enjoyed passing some of his skills on to the next generation. His family was the center of his life and he was an active, involved father and grandfather. He loved growing fruits and vegetables, cutting wood for the woodstove and creating landscaping where he could enjoy the birds and wildlife on the 8 acres in Howard County where he and his wife lived for 35 years. He enjoyed a wide range of music, spent a lot of time researching and documenting his family’s history, and enjoyed vacations that usually included mountain or ocean destinations. He played lacrosse at Catonsville High School when they won the Baltimore County Championship and continued to attend and follow local college lacrosse. Also an avid football fan, he loved the Baltimore Colts and later the Baltimore Ravens and cheered on the Virginia Tech Hokies for years.
