Rose Marie Mettle
July 13, 1934 - December 20, 2017
Rose Marie Mettle (née Arena) of Eldersburg, Maryland, passed away on December 20, 2017 in Westminster, Maryland, after a brief illness. She was 83.
The third of four children, Rose was born July 13, 1934 in Baltimore to Rosario Dominic Arena and Asunta "Susie" Angela Arena (née Roccisano), Rose, known as "Rosie", "Roe", "Oma", or "Bisnonna" to her loved ones, grew up in and around South Baltimore with her parents, maternal grandparents, and her siblings Mary, Jimmy, and Libby. A 1952 graduate of Seton High School, she married Joseph Hooper Mettle, Jr. on October 9, 1954 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Pikesville. They had four children: Kathy, Joey, Vincent, and Angela. They raised their family in Pikesville, except for the years they lived in Germany, from 1971-1974. Rosie and Joe moved to Eldersburg in 1981.
When she was a teenager, Rosie decided she wanted to become a Registered Nurse and specialize in elder care. She fulfilled that dream in 1977, when she and her daughter Kathy graduated from Nursing School at Catonsville Community College on the same day, walking one after the other across the stage to receive their diplomas. She went on to become the Assistant Director of Nursing at Pikesville Convalescence Center. Her life's work was to alleviate pain and suffering in the elderly. She nursed Joe through his final illness, until his death in 2011.
Rosie was known for her quick wit, clever comebacks, and generous heart. She had a special gift for making her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel like the smartest, most talented people in the world, and she encouraged them in their interests. She made everyone she knew feel unconditionally loved and accepted. A spunky, stubborn, endlessly quotable woman full of personality and spirit, she mastered the art of bickering as a legitimate form of communication, to great comedic effect.
She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Longo and Mrs. Elizabeth Angela Klein, her sister-in-law Mrs. Helen Mary Arena, her brother-in-law Dr. Michael Elihu Klein, her sister-in-law Mrs. Marlene Catherine McNair, and her four children: Kathryn Darlene Bauer (Louis), Joseph Hooper Mettle III (Laura), Vincent Dominick Mettle (Karen Jordan), and Angela Frances Mettle Rusch (Robert).
She is also survived by her ten grandchildren: Adrienne Marie Burr (Jesse), Brent Lee Bauer (Michelle), Joseph Daniel Mettle (Amanda), Kathleen Marie Mettle, William Robert Mettle, Matthew Vincent Stevens, Nicholas Joseph Stevens (AbiGayle), Austen Michael Stevens, Easton Robie Arena Rusch, and Aniston Rose Arena Rusch. In addition, she is survived by her two great-grandchildren, Ellie Marie Burr and Amelia Rose Mettle. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and cousins across the United States and the world, and her many dear and loving friends and neighbors.
She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Hooper Mettle Jr., her brother Vincent "Jimmy" Dominic Arena, and her parents, Rosario Dominic Arena and Asunta "Susie" Angela Arena (née Roccisano).
