It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Deforest (Daugharthy) Roberts, a remarkable woman who lived a truly extraordinary life. She departed this world on February 15, 2024 holding her son’s hand, surrounded by the love of her family and the warmth of a life well-lived.

Born on June 3, 1928, to LeRoy Elson “Roy” and Madalyn "Madge" Daugharthy in Jamestown, NY, Shirley embarked on a remarkable journey from the serene landscapes, family farms and generations of extended family of Warren, PA, to the vibrant cityscape of Takoma Park, MD, at the age of 18. Alongside her parents, brother, and sister, she embraced a new chapter in her life, marking the beginning of a legacy that would leave an indelible impact on all who knew her.

Known for her sharp wit, kindness, and class, Shirley stood up for herself and others, leaving a legacy of empowerment and advocacy. Her quick humor brought joy to those around her, and her compassion touched the lives of many. Her love for her family was fierce and unwavering, creating a bond that will endure through the ages.

From an early age, it was evident that she was a woman before her time. With grace, resilience, and a pioneering spirit, she navigated through life's journey, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In her early working years, Shirley found herself immersed in the bustling energy of Washington, DC, where she worked in a dental office. She fell in love with the vibrant downtown atmosphere, swiftly adapting to city life. Her favorite city, however, was the iconic New York City, where she reveled in the glitz and glamour that accompanied each visit. Dancing to the rhythm of big band music was one of her greatest joys, and her ability to sing it better than most became a defining part of her charismatic spirit.

Shirley passed on her love of music to her son, cherishing moments when he would share his voice. Many of her favorite outings were to hear her son sing. She was a unique blend of elegance and down-to-earth charm—a fancy farm girl who could ride bareback on a horse and seamlessly transition to the dance floor that very evening. For many years, Shirley also found great joy in roller skating, and her laughter echoed through the rink as she glided gracefully, adding another layer to the tapestry of her vibrant life. Her adventurous spirit led her to ski the Alps and navigate the open waters on multiple boats, embodying the essence of a life well-lived.

Beyond her zest for life, Shirley was the unwavering support for her family. She cheered on each of her children and grandchildren, wiped away countless tears and was a pillar of strength, famously keeping a "stiff upper lip" even in the face of adversity. She possessed a rare talent for mending not just clothes, but also hearts.

Shirley found enduring joy with her devoted husband, Perry. Their love story was one of mutual respect, partnership, and commitment, creating a home filled with warmth and laughter. Together, they became the "OC Darlings" in Ocean City, MD, a haven where they welcomed family and friends, creating lasting memories.

Shirley was a loving spouse, devoted parent, and cherished grandparent. Her wisdom and kindness nurtured a flourishing family, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering commitment to family values.

As we celebrate Shirley's remarkable life, let us remember the lessons she imparted, the love she shared, and the indomitable spirit that defined her. In her memory, may we strive to emulate the strength, resilience, and compassion that made her a woman ahead of her time.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Perry Roberts, daughter Paulajean (Jones) Belka, grandson Trevor Jones, granddaughter Kelly Jones, brother Alan L. Daugharthy and sister Julia A. Daugharthy (Linaugh), and parents Roy and Madge (Dobson) Daugharthy.

(Butch) Jones and his wife Karen; she is survived by her grandchildren, Angela Castaldy, and Melissa Williamson, great grandchildren, Kiersten Wiginton, Olivia Castaldy, Alayna Williamson, Tanner Castaldy, Christopher Williamson, Jr. and Zoey Jones.
