Mrs. Howell spent many years researching her family history, enjoying every minute and every find. She loved to collect recipes and in 1974 she and her husband started a candy making business from their home in Richmond, VA. Their product sold in various restaurants and gift shops in the Richmond, Williamsburg area, including Jamestown Festival Park and The Shirley Plantation. They later opened a deli style sandwich shop in the old kitchen building at Shirley located on historic route 5 near Richmond. Their customers included Lady Bird Johnson and football quarterback, Sonny Jergenson.

Mrs. Howell wrote poetry and songs, following in the footsteps of her mother who was very gifted in these areas. Mrs. Howell was the adoring wife of her husband who was the love of her life. She also embraced her stepson, Melvin E. Howell, III as “the son of her heart.” She valued the love and friendship of her brother’s children, John, Tom, Mark, Susan, Debra, and Roberta. She felt blessed to have had several dear and close friends of her life.
