Utha Jean Rupert, 91, known to nearly all as ‘Tish,’ passed away July 28, 2024 at Filcare Home Care of Clear Spring, MD. She passed comfortably with Den and Nancy of Filcare by her side.
Utha Jean was born in Mt. Airy, MD on January 4, 1933. She was raised on the family’s dairy farm on Buffalo road. Tish enjoyed the farm life with her father, Leslie B. Rigler and mother, Utha L. Rigler; and also her two brothers, Leslie B. Rigler, Jr. and Timothy L. Rigler. In 1959 Tish built her home on Dance Hall Road, Mt. Pleasant, MD. She loved her family, her neighborhood and her friends. Her working career of 37 years with the U.S. Government ended in1989. After retirement from the government she worked part-time, in retail, sales and marketing until 2004. Tish continued to, single-handedly, operate her horse farm after the death of her husband Richard D. Rupert in 2005 until her open-heart surgery in 2019.
Tish had a great love for life and had many interests. They include: singing, dancing and motorcycle riding with her husband Dick Rupert. Tish was best known for her lifetime genuine passion for horses and all things equestrian. Her claim was that she mucked stalls every day for 80 years. Through the years she was an active member of the New Market - Middletown Valley Hounds, Goshen Hunt, Howard County Hunt, Central Maryland Saddle Club, Trail Riders of Today, Chestnut Ridge Horseman's Club and the League of Maryland Horsemen. She had many years of trail riding and horse camping.
Utha Jean is survived by; her son, John P. Swomley and wife Ynita of Martinsburg, her granddaughters Natasha Scolaro (husband Anthony) and Krista Henry (husband Jamie), her great-grandchildren, Audrey and Weston Henry. She is also survived by her brothers, Leslie B. Rigler, Jr. (wife Eva), Timothy L. Rigler (wife Regina), and step-sons, John S. Rupert (wife Gaye), Richard D. Rupert, Jr. (wife Kathleen), step-daughter, Diana J. Livingston, and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She will be long remembered by the many loving members of the Rupert Family, and countless special friends including; Sharon Draper, Mimi Ernst, Brenda Yates and all the neighbors from Dance Hall Road.
In lieu of flowers it is suggested that contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
A memorial service is being planned for the near future.
