William Doherty

William Edwin Doherty, Sr. age 96, died peacefully at his home at Brightview Westminster Ridge surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Bernice (née Verville), his father William Michael Doherty, his mother, Alice Long Doherty, and his sister, Joyce Dickess.
Bill is survived by his children Denise Johnson (Kenith 'Speedy') of Sykesville, MD, William 'Bill' Doherty (Ann) of Finksburg, MD, Laurette O'Keefe (James 'Jim') of Eldersburg, and Cecille Wallace (Keith) of Westminster, MD. He is also survived by grandchildren Emilie Fredrick (Steve), Abigail Johnson (Mike Schofield), Shannon Spoler, James O'Keefe Jr. (Chelsea Henery), Laci Doherty (Jake Goldizen), Sean Wallace (Astrid), William Wallace, Aidan Wallace, Bridget Wallace and great-grandchildren Jackson Shipley, Oscar and Howard Fredrick, and Aria and Stella Wallace. Bill is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Bill was born on October 24, 1926, In New Haven, Ct. to William and Alice Doherty. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1944. Bill received a full academic scholarship to Yale University. Bill postponed his studies at Yale to enlist in the United States Navy and serve his country in WWII. He served as a Signalman on a Landing Ship Tank (LST) in the Pacific Theater. After serving, Bill graduated from Yale University (Class of 1950) with a BS in Economics. He met his wife, Bernice, at her niece’s baptism, beginning a love that lasted a lifetime.
He worked for the Social Security Administration and moved his growing family from Connecticut to Randallstown, Md, when SSA opened their National Headquarters in Woodlawn, in 1961. After an early retirement as a Director of Policy, Bill began working for Union Trust Bank in Baltimore, spearheading the development of their Automated Teller Machine networks.
Over the years, Bill, an avid, talented photographer, shot and catalogued hundreds of photographs for his family to enjoy. He and his wife traveled the country and foreign locales, Bill shooting artistic images, particularly of the Southwestern U.S. In the 1980’s and 90’s, Bill and Bernice became avid Volksmarchers, partaking in their hobby wherever they went. Perhaps his most rewarding occupation was the 'nannying' job he and Bernice shared, watching their 9 grandchildren.
Bill was a respected and loved member of the Brightview Community. He enjoyed acting in numerous plays, calling Bingo, giving travelogue presentations to fellow residents, and participating in Veterans' events. A devoted Orioles, Capitals, and, most enthusiastically, Ravens fan, Bill was honored as the Salute to Service recipient at M &T Bank Stadium in November 2017.
He was a faithful member of St. John's Parish in Westminster and The Knights of Columbus.
The family will receive friends at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 (Next to South Carroll High School) on Thursday from 4:30-7:30 PM; Funeral Liturgy (Mass) on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 1:00PM at St. John’s R.C. Church 43 Monroe St, Westminster, MD 21157.
