William Ronald Smith, 60, of Westminster, died Friday, January 22, 2010 at National Institutes of Health Center, Bethesda, MD, of Melanoma. Born June 14th, 1949 in Baltimore County, MD, he was the son of Ena Smith (nee Roles) of Eldersburg and the late William Robert Smith. He attended Milford Mill High School and graduated in 1967. He joined the Maryland State Highway on his 18th birthday and retired as the chief traffic engineer in 2000. Surviving are loving wife Susan Smith and beloved children Daniel Joseph Smith and daughter-in-law Lauren of St. Louis; and Rachel Hannah Smith and her boyfriend Matt Bollinger of Westminster. Despite a serious hip injury as a teenager, Ron pursued his outdoor activities with unrelenting energy and enthusiasm. He enjoyed backpacking, especially in Yosemite National Park, climbing, canoeing, and caving. He excelled at photography and won many prizes for his mountain landscapes. He enjoyed astronomy, building his own telescopes and cataloguing deep sky objects from his observatory in West Virginia. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 24, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm and again Monday, January 25 from 6 to 8 pm only at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, (Beside South Carroll High School), Winfield, MD. 21784.
